The Stables
Grovewood is actively developing a 4.79-acre infill site that was formerly home to the historic Aurora Horse Boarding Stables, operated by the Baker family since 1947. The name The Stables honors this legacy — a place that fostered community, connection, and care for the natural world. The new two-phase development pays tribute to that spirit through thoughtful design and programming that supports intergenerational living and nature-forward engagement.
The project will include 134 affordable housing units — one-, two-, and three-bedroom — on a site successfully rezoned from R1 to R4 in 2024 and located within a Qualified Census Tract (QCT). Design features include walking trails, play areas, community gardens, indoor gathering spaces, and other elements that reflect the site’s former use. The location is adjacent to Exposition Regional Park and a City Rec Center to the north, Highline Community Elementary School and the Highline Canal Trail to the east, and the Aurora Housing Authority’s Westerly Creek and Kentucky Village campus to the south. Resident Services and Programming are informed by outreach to the community and future residents. The original stables, pens, fencing, and outbuildings were respectfully removed in late 2024.
